Building Stronger Immunity

Recently, I created a post on social media in regards to the strengthening of our Immune System. It was well received due to the recent influenza, bronchitis, & pneumonia symptoms that were wreaking havoc on this side of the Mississippi. If you had not seen my post, I will reiterate my thoughts & advice within this Blog post, & hopefully expand on it as well.

People often ask me how I’m able to stay in great health all year round, year after year. Many who know me well, know that I have not been sick since 1989, not even a cold. I attribute my strong immune system to several things. I will categorize those things for you, in hope that my advice may benefit your health & strengthen your Immune System.

I. VITAMINS & MINERALS

I consistently take my vitamins & minerals, daily. Here is an outline of the vitamins & minerals that my wife & I regularly take. (This is not specified for each individual. It’s a general outline. The most accurate way to test for vitamin & mineral deficiencies is a blood test. Then, a more thorough and accurate consumption of the necessary vitamins & minerals can be applied.) Vitamins & Minerals are best absorbed in the small intestine when taken in tablet form, (like a chalky-aspirin-like consistency.) Herbs & herbal compounds may be in capsule form or liquid form. Fish oil is best absorbed in liquid form. For best absorption, always take vitamins & minerals with meals.

II. CITRULLINE MALATE, (L-CITRULLINE)

X-Tend Branched Chain Amino Acids, (by Scivation,) contains 1000 mg of this immunity booster, per 1 scoop serving! In addition to this, the branched chain amino acids & electrolytes in this product aid with recovery & repair of cells & muscle tissue.  It is a powder mixed with water that is readily absorbed.

III. CLEAN EATING

70% of our Immune System & immune response is in our Digestive Tract. What we eat greatly affects the bacterias that exist within us. Foods high is sugar and processed foods often feed harmful bacteria in our Digestive Tract, causing a reduction in our bodies’ natural abilities to counter bacterial infections & fight off viral infections.

Strive for quality proteins such as wild caught fish, free range eggs, & organic chicken. Consume nutrient-dense vegetables, such as spinach, asparagus, cauliflower, string beans, broccoli, & kale, (organic if possible.) Keep your carbohydrates “naturally occurring,” & not processed. Items such as sweet potato, yam, red skin potato, brown rice, oats, & quinoa will provide you with excellent nutrients, and are best kept in the early part of the day, (Meals 1, 2, & 3 on the Remedy Recipes format.) Healthy fats are also very important for cellular integrity & digestion. I recommend sources such as avocado, almonds or almond butter, & olive oil.

IV. HYDRATION

My wife and I consistently drink one gallon of water, daily. Hydration is a key to good health. You cannot leave your cells, organs, & digestion thirsting for hydration, and expect to fight off viruses or bacterial infections. This is vital to staying healthy!

V. REST

The importance of rest is often overlooked. The body needs time to heal & repair. If you exhaust it, it will eventually fail you. We strive for 7-8 hours each night.

VI. Hygiene

I’m an unapologetic germa-phobe. (It goes along with my O.C.D., which the Macho Man Randy Savage told me stood for “One Cool Dude,” rather than that other, more negative terminology.) I wash my hands thoroughly, use hand sanitizer, and never, ever touch my face. It shocks me when I see people who have formed this habit of touching their faces. An even worse habit is licking a finger to turn a page. You’re pretty much saying, “Welcome germs!” Be very careful and avoid shaking hands with others as much as possible. If you must shake hands, wash them or hand-sanitize immediately after. I don’t even shake hands in Church for “Peace Be With You.” I just wave & say it. Your hands come in contact with thousands of microbial bacteria and viruses. If you want to stay healthy, I recommend that you break these habits.

VII. SHARING FOOD OR BEVERAGES

You get yours & I get mine. That’s my rule. If you have kids, just think for a moment. They come in contact with hundreds of nose-wiping, grimy-handed, coughing-without-covering-their-mouths, touching-everything-and-every-doorknob virus-harboring kids. School is a germ-fest, and you never know what virus or bacteria was passed along to your child on any given day. Don’t be so quick to taste a bite of something or take a sip of something that they have had. This habit will get you sick, for sure!

VIII. OUR MEDICATED SOCIETY

We live in a highly medicated society. People regularly take medicine for any little ailment, and rarely allow the body’s own mechanisms to do their job. Our Immune System needs little fights in order to gradually get stronger & stronger so that we can one day fight the big fight. Allow your Immune System to do what it was designed to do. Let it fight off the small infections. Give it the things that it needs to be strengthened.

These habits have greatly helped me & my immunity. I hope that some of this advice helps you too. Consistency in all these matters is of the prime importance. If you are consistent with anything, you will be rewarded with the results, including a stronger Immune System.

I also hope that you’re having a productive & proactive LENT. May you be a better version of yourself!

Until next month,

~ John D.
