Consistency!!!

March 1st marks exactly 365 days of consecutive cardiovascular exercise for me. During this time, I also did some form of resistance exercise, (weight training, calisthenics, etc…,) 6 days per week, every week but one week around Christmas Time. That week, I only did 5 days of resistance exercise in addition to the 7 days of cardio. I didn’t miss that day, I intentionally placed it on my calendar because I felt that my body needed an extra rest day that week.

When I make a promise to myself, I take it just as seriously as when I make a promise to anyone else. I keep the promise. I keep the commitment. I keep to the plan.

There are several important necessities regarding being fit and healthy. Discipline, willpower, nutrition, exercise, and consistency are among the most important, but consistency is atop the list. If only people could apply good habits in regards to nutrition & exercise on a daily basis, and not so easily swerve off course. For 26 years I’ve watched the behavior of people from all walks of life. Perhaps 1 in 10 had the consistency needed to go the distance and truly make health and fitness a lifestyle. Most just cannot keep that promise to themselves to make it a part of their daily routine. If one can do something positive on a regular basis, the results will show. Repetition breeds success, and that’s especially true for nutrition and exercise. I’ve often wondered how some can be consistent with other areas of their lives, such as work, school, or even watching a TV show at a specific time each day, but could not be consistent with something like eating correctly and exercising. It’s even more difficult for me to understand how some can be consistent with bad habits, but not be consistent with something that will benefit their lives instead.

I challenge you to make a promise to yourself this Spring. Lent is almost here, and it’s a perfect time to not only let go of bad habits, but create good and positive habits. Make a promise to yourself that you’ll eat healthy for a consecutive stretch of time. Make a promise to yourself that you’ll perform some exercise on a daily basis, even if it’s just a 30 minute walk. Make the promise to yourself to be consistent and not miss a single day!

Consistency is the key that will open the door to the results that you seek.
